If it aint broke, fix it 'til it is.

Six days into owning the estate, I wrote it off.

I'd just got the car how I wanted it, fitted the stereo, the bluetooth kit, the sub, the amp, got the boot liner in etc, it was nice and clean, I hoovered out the inside, brilliant.

Until I approached approached a roundabout on a dual carriageway, in the right hand lane, looking right for a gap, see a nice gap, second gear, foot down, bit of turbo lag so I'm keeping an eye on the rear view to see if the gap behind me is closing up while the turbo kicks in.

As I glance forward there's an unexplained stationary car in the inside lane of the roundabout that wasn't there when I set off.

I hit the brakes as hard as my right foot could do it, then the sickening crunch, and as the bonnet creased up, I knew the damage was bad.

I spoke to the lady in the car I'd hit, who couldn't have been nicer, turns out an old Corsa cut across in front of her, she slammed on, stopped and I kindly parked in her rear bumper.

Her damage was minimal and we swapped details.

My damage is:

Items that need replacing are:

  • Bonnet
  • Bumper
  • Grill
  • Bumper crash bar
  • Both headlights
  • Intercooler
  • Plastic trim above slam panel

Admiral were very swift with my claim and even wrote the car off from the above photos. I felt it was pointless to have it collected, taken to a dealer, for them to tell them it's knackered, just to have it brought back to mine (since I'd told them I wanted to keep it from the outset).

So they initially offered me £800, minus the £500 excess, minus the cost of keeping the car. Meant that I would keep the car, and get just over £100.

I scoffed at the £800 and told the girl on the phone that if she could find me a car in this shape for £800 then I would buy it.

So they upped it to £1000 and we called it quits. I get to keep the car, pay my excess and I get just over £370 which will more than cover the repair costs.

A crappy start to ownership of this car, but I'll persevere because I love it.

On 09/08/2012 I spoke to a breaker called S and S Motors in Bolton, Manchester who had a Colorado red breaker in. They're supplying me with:

  • Bonnet
  • Bumper
  • Grill
  • Both headlights
  • Bumper crash bar
  • Plastic front slam panel
  • Intercooler
Here is the donor car:
All delivered for £200. Can't say fairer than that can I. Should be here in a few days.

I did a little bit more poking (luckily before the parts were dispatched) and found I also needed the front slam panel (massive metal bit) and also a metal pipe that runs between the headlights that likely carries coolant or something to do with the air con. So I emailed the seller and paid an extra £50 for those bits too.
